Hina dolls, or "hina-ningyō," are ornamental dolls displayed during the Hinamatsuri festival in Japan, celebrated on March 3rd, near the beginning of Spring. They typically represent the Emperor and Empress in traditional Heian (794 to 1185) period attire and are believed to protect the health and happiness of young girls. The Hina doll is usually thought of as being calm even stoic, but since it is a joyous festival, I have my Hina Doll dancing with abandon.-Mayumi Oda
